Monitoring the State of Our Watersheds

Across Arizona, a range of efforts are underway to track watershed conditions using scientifically grounded indicators over time. Often described as "state of the watershed" assessments or "watershed report cards," these approaches integrate long-term data, community input, and partner monitoring to understand trends in water resources, habitat, climate, cultural values, and broader socio-ecological conditions.

Together, these assessments provide regular, transparent snapshots of watershed health - highlighting where conditions are stable, where stressors are increasing, and where management and restoration actions can make, or have already made, a positive difference.

State of the Watershed

Cienega Watershed Partnership

Cienega Watershed Partnership brought partners together to define meaningful indicators, share data, and create a common framework for evaluating watershed health that supports adaptive management and community engagement.

Verde River Watershed Report Card

Friends of the Verde River

Friends of the Verde River and the Nature Conservancy have developed the Verde River Watershed Report Card, which offers a practical example of how collaborative monitoring yields a comprehensive view of watershed condition to inform restoration and policy priorities. Indicators encompass water, habitat, and community indicators.
